Artist in Residence

The Duo

THE AXELSSON & NILSSON DUO began in 1986 and consists of trombonist Ivo Nilson and percussionist Jonny Axelsson. The duo performs contemporary art music. With a unique repertoire of pieces dedicated to the duo and a number of solo pieces for both instruments, it includes a richness of opportunities to put together multifaceted concert programmes. Concerts with the Axelsson & Nilsson Duo are often commended for their meticulous detail and composition.

Despite the small setting, the duo has presented portraits of several composers, such as Volker Staub, John Cage, Iannis Xenakis, Karin Rehngvist, Christian Wolff and David Swärd. Composing and improvising have always been an important part of their work and joint compositions have been performed ever since the first concert. Their many projects also involve collaborations with other forms of artistic expression: for instance, the theatre groups Teatr Weimar in Malmö and Alice Kollektiv in Stockholm, the Choreograph Gun Lund in Gothenburg and the multi media artist Thomas Witzmann in Cologne, among others.

Concert activities consist of tours and festivals in Sweden as well as all over Europe, the USA, South Africa and a number of Asian countries. Besides making recordings for radio and TV, the Axelsson & Nilsson Duo has released CDs on Chamber Sound, dbp, Wergo, Caprice and Phono Suecia. In 2005 the Axelsson & Nilsson Duo was nominated for the Nordic Council Music Prize and they became “Artist in Residence” at CoMA in Växjö the same year.
